The Price of Data

Gottfried Vossen, University of Münster, Germany

Plenary session 1

As data is becoming a commodity similar to electricity, as individuals become more and more transparent thanks to the comprehensive data traces they leave, and as data gets increasingly connected across company boundaries, the question arises of whether a price tag should be attached to data and, if so, what it should say. In this talk, the price of data is studied from a variety of angles and areas, including telecommunication, social networks, advertising, and automation; the issues discussed include aspects such as fair pricing, data ownership, and ethics. Special attention is paid to data marketplaces, where nowadays everybody can trade data, although the currency in which buyers are requested to pay may no longer be what they expect.

About the speaker
Gottfried Vossen is a Professor of Computer Science in the Department of Information Systems at the University of Muenster in Germany. He is a Fellow of the German Computer Science Society and an Honorary Professor at the University of Waikato Management School in Hamilton, New Zealand. He received his master’s and Ph.D. degrees as well as the German Habilitation from the Technical University of Aachen in Germany, and is an Editor-in-Chief of Elsevier's Information Systems - An International Journal. His current research interests include conceptual as well as application-oriented challenges concerning databases, information systems, business process modelling, Smart Web applications, cloud computing, and big data.

Agency of Computer Systems

Grzegorz Dobrowolski, AGH University of Science and Technology, Poland

Plenary session 2

Observing the great popularity of a multi-agent approach especially in application aimed at building models which are used in studies on physical processes, phenomena and organization of the real world, it can be fruitful to investigate how the agent model is used, how deep its expression power is exploited, in which phase of the life cycle the computerized issue of the model may take advantage of agency ideas, and so on…
The course of presentation starts with short recall of agency, then sketch of multi-agent system model is presented. Both parts are to describe the model possibilities which are, next, presented from the outer point of view giving insight into expression power of the agent model. Having all this in the background, agency of existing and known from the literature computer systems is analyzed. In order to provide also some meaningful details an example is discussed. All ends with remarks which try to answer to the stated question.

About the speaker
Grzegorz Dobrowolski is a Professor of Computer Science in the Department of Computer Science at the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow. He received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees as well as the Habilitation from the AGH, too. He has pursued the academic discipline of computer science, mainly in the fields of intelligence and operations research.
In theoretical aspects his current research are focused primarily on the following groups of problems: methodological foundation of building multi-agent systems; problems of a formal specification and verification of multi-agent systems; simulation and identification of real-life systems based on multi-agent models; critical situations in multi-agent systems and preventing crises emerging; agent-based approach to the genetic and evolutionary computation.
His practical achievements are grouped primarily in fields of: construction of computer tools supporting activities devoted to homeland security, in particular, tools to support criminal analysis; solving management problems of real-life systems using simulation approach; design of information systems aimed at a scientific support of an industry.

Collective decisions in human centric IT/ICT systems: a crucial role of affects, judgments and intentions

Janusz Kacprzyk, Polish Academy of Sciences, Poland

Plenary session 3

We are concerned with serious challenges facing the broadly perceived IT/ICT which are implied by a crucial role of the human being. This implies a necessity to make computers to be "cognitive partners" for the humans. In general, decision making is the key problem as it is omnipresent in virtually all human activities, even if mimicked by/in inanimate systems. We show first some difficulties in traditional, formal approaches to decision making boils down to finding a best decision, usually using some choice or optimization tools. We indicate inherent difficulties relate to a crucial role related to inherent characteristics of all human centric problems, that is, a need to take into account affects, judgments, attitudes, evaluations and intentions of the human being, which are usually imprecise (fuzzy), changeable, subjective, involve pro and con arguments, etc. Moreover, realistic and implementable models should involve multiple agents (decision makers), who should act collectively, for instance, cooperate or collaborate, multiple criteria and dynamics, as well as different general attitudes, notably ranging from greed to fairness. We show some possible solutions to the above general challenges, in particular using elements of affective computing, bipolar decision making using non-orthodox multicriteria decision making, intention modeling, a BDI (belief-desire-intention) multiagent system architectures, etc. We will also mention some relations to Wang’s cognitive informatics.

About the speaker
Janusz Kacprzyk graduated from Warsaw University of Technology, Poland, with M.Sc. in automatic control and computer science, obtained in 1977 Ph.D. in systems analysis and in 1991 D.Sc. in computer science.
